Versatile Cranberry Sauce - not just for Thanksgiving

This is my tasty and delicious recipe for Cranberry Sauce that will compliment your Turkey and all the trimmings for Thanksgiving. My motto is "say NO to the can!"   It's also very versatile and can be used to compliment many other dishes such as Roasted Chicken, Pork and Cheese.   Try it and see!

Homemade Cranberry Sauce

Ingredients:
  • 1 bag cranberries
  • 1/2 C. sugar
  • 1/2 C. brown sugar
  • 1/2 C. orange juice
  • 1/2 C. water
  • 1/4 t. cinnamon
  • zest of one orange
  • fresh juice of 1/2 orange

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, dissolve the sugars in the juice and water.
Add the cinnamon and then the cranberries. Add the zest and fresh juice and stir.

Cook the cranberry mixture until they start to pop, about 10 - 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat, transfer to a serving bowl and let it cool.
The Cranberry Sauce will thicken on its own as it cools.

I like to put it into small jars to give as gifts... then store it in the refrigerator.

Tangy and thick, jars like this don't last very long in our home.

This is not just for Thanksgiving either. A spoonful of this great Cranberry Sauce over a warm wedge of Brie with bib lettuce and bread make for a delicious snack or appetizer!

Thanks for the comment Stacy. And you have inspired me to make my own cranberry sauce. I always bought the canned ones (shhh don't tell anyone hehe). But now that i'm cooking more this sounds the right way to go!

I'm with ya. Whole berry sauce from scratch is so easy, It makes you wonder how the canned stuff continues to sell. I do something pretty similar, but I use wine in lieu of oj. Like the brown sugar idea; I might have to try that next time!

I have grown to like cranberry sauce over the years. Your sauce looks like just the right consistency for my tastes. My mom use to make it very chunky - didn't care for it that much. Recently, I had a cranberry orange muffin - oh my gosh!

I love home made cranberry sauce and wouldn't think of eating it from a can. Part of the experience for me is having it warm; kind of mellows out the tartness of the berries.
Thanks for sharing your rendition!

This is a similar recipe to the cranberry sauce that I make. It is so easy and sooo much better than the can. We make extra so we can have leftovers. It is delicious warm over pancakes, Yum! Yours looks so good!
